A THREE-LEGGED dog and her young puppy, who were rescued from "disgusting conditions" in Ireland, have been brought to Old Coulsdon to look for a new home.

Penny, a red and white border collie, was found in a garden giving birth to her puppies with her right leg full of gangrene.

The three-year-old dog had been caught in a snare and had crawled back to her home, a property in Ireland, but the owner did not take her to the vet.

By the time she was found her leg was infected and it had to be amputated.

Penny did have a full litter of pups but due to the conditions she was living in only one of the puppies survived – a black and white male called Tuppence.

The pair were flown over to the UK on Tuesday and are currently living at the Furry Friends animal rescue centre.

Founder Emma Semple, who runs the centre, said: "Penny is so adorable."

Emma said Penny is a quiet and shy dog so she cannot be rehomed with young children, but could live with other dogs.

Anyone who could give the pair a home is asked to call Furry Friends on 020 8407 1080.

To put a shy dog in a plane is cruelty in its self.”

“I cannot offer this dog a home, but my advice to you all is - three legged dogs manage perfectly well. I have one. He has only one front leg and runs about quite happily. He is a very happy dog. He is also a film star now - we have just done 2 days' filming for a film called "Black Pond" - about a couple with a three legged dog. He was in the RSPCA for 6 months. No-one wanted a three legged dog. He is wonderful. So - all you dog lovers - this dog advertised here is going to be a wonderful companion to you.”
