Police have launched a murder inquiry after a man was stabbed to death in South Norwood.

Officers were called to Whitehorse Lane at around 8.20pm last night (Sunday) to reports of a man suffering from serious injuries.

The victim, 26, is believed to have walked into a shop, on Whitehorse Lane, after being stabbed.

He is understood to have asked for help and for the police to be called before collapsing to the floor.

Police and the London Ambulance Service attended and at around 9pm the man was pronounced dead at the scene. He had been fatally stabbed.

Next of kin have yet to be informed and police are awaiting a formal identification of the victim.

A post mortem examination will be held in due course.

A murder investigation has been launched by the Met's Homicide and Serious Crime Command.

This morning (Monday) Whitehorse Lane is cordoned off from St Mary's Road to Clifton Road. Adjoining streets including Park Road are also cordoned off.

Police dogs were called in to search the area for clues on Sunday night.

The stabbing took place close to Selhurst Park where just a couple of hours earlier Crystal Palace had played out a 2-2 draw with Aston Villa in the FA Cup.

Police say there is no indication that the stabbing had anything to do with the match but as they are still looking into the circumstances of the death they have not yet completely ruled it out.

“Thanks for that anon, anon - if you don't live there then you are not in a position to comment!
(The junkie probably thought you were a cabbie).”

“AR - This had nothing to do with football.

    This is not the 80s.”

“I live on whitehorse lane where the incident occurred. My daughter left my house at around 8.15 pm on Sunday night and we never saw or heard anything. My heart goes out to his family at this time.”

“I walk my dog all the time here in South Norwood and was out on Sunday night too. Im female and always felt safe here. Im sure this was related to football as there was a match earlier and I heard football supporters making a racket near the grounds but they are not locals. South Norwood has nice areas and not so nice areas, like anywhere else. Im sure there are drugs, muggings and murders in 'nice' parts of London too.”

“Karen - I think you have misread Daves comments. Dave was not accusing this poor lad of being a junkie. He was giving a possible reason of why he was attacked.

And for your information Postman Pat, no, I do not live in South Norwood, not anymore. I used to live near the high street until a 8 years ago. I myself have seen the area fall apart. The last straw came when a well known local junkie tried to jump into my car at Norwood Junction. Scared the life out of me.

RIP, you didnt deserve to die.”

“Well said Karen. I'll bet Dave and Anon don't even live in South Norwood.
I do and the area is good! Furthermore, I often see the police on patrol and they are most helpful.”

“This is so tragic. Dave SE25, I am disgusted by your comments, surmising how this young man died does nothing except hurt his family. The post above you says it all. His parents and family need support not needless imaginations from you.

My thoughts are with them at this time.”

“I hope the police do find out the motive for this, as we know most things that happen are either caused from an argument, fuelled by alcohol, or a robbery attempt, these can happen to anyone. As most of us know there are well known gang members in south norwood. Anne you only teach in south norwood, bit different if you actually live there.”

“It's not fine Anne, the area is riddled with drug dealers and junkies. Gangs of feral youth rule the streets even with a police station right on the high street.

    Awful place.”
