OLD Whitgiftians bagged their first win in this limited overs league match to leave visitors Epsom stuck in the Division One drop zone with just a week of the Surrey Championship campaign left.

Epsom skipper Danny Secchi won the toss on a very soft wicket that was still drying out and asked OW to bat first.

Veteran seamer Stan Somerford bowled an accurate spell of 10 overs for just 20 runs but no other Epsom bowler was able to exert the same control as David Ward and Laurie Evans put on 93 for the first wicket, Evans fell to a great one handed catch from Sonu Sharma moving backwards at mid-on for 38.

Ward fell a few overs later bowled leg stump by a seaming delivery from Aaron Somerford (2-37) for 67. Both openers had hit three sixes. Sonu Sharma (2-42) was unable to exert his usual stranglehold as Ahmad Raja and Alex Goward addded 48 for the third wicket before both fell with the score on 162.

Raja (34) missed a sweep against Sharma to fall lbw and Goward (15) was caught on the long off boundary by Will Moore off Secchi (1-48).

Murtaza Hussain and Sam Woodward then added 50 with the former Surrey all rounder looking in great touch to make a rapid 34 from just 23 balls before top edging a cut off Sharma and Sean Coughlan hit 13 in helping Woodward (25no) make the most of the last two overs of the batting powerplay as OWs closed on a very competitive 235-6.

In response the OW opening attack of Fred Woodrow and Jason Lewis gave little away with Woodrow removing both Epsom openers Ben Hudson, caught by Murtaza at short cover for three, and Ali Murrell, taken by Woodward at backward point for 13.

Ahmad Raja with a direct hit from cover also ran out the dangerous Moore for just seven and Epsom were struggling at 51-3 in the 15th. Sohail Shah top scored for Epsom with a patient 36 and added 30 with Sharma for the fourth wicket before being bowled off stump by Raja.

Murtaza had Sharma smartly stumped by 14-year-old keeper Matt Stiddard and then Will Baker brilliantly caught by Woodward at second slip in his first over.

Asim Zeb and Jack Baker then fell to the first two balls of Murtaza's second over, both bowled, with the Epsom innings in disarray at 99-8. Skipper Secchi survived the hat-trick ball before falling caught off Freddie van den Bergh soon after. It was some belated resistance from Aaron Somerford assisted by father Stan that held up the inevitable for nine overs before Murtaza completed a fine spell of 5-11 by bowling Aaron for 25 to leave OWs 94-run winners.
