PLAYERS in the Croydon Netball League helped raise hundreds of pounds for a cancer charity last weekend – just by wearing pink.

All teams wore a pink item for the day and it raised more than £500 for Breakthrough Breast Cancer.

The action itself saw defending champions HS A record their first win of the Premier Division campaign with a convincing 53-43 triumph over Croham.

Croham made it tough in the first quarter but were unable to convert their shots.

Lauren Webster and Karen Gillick were spot on their shooting and the Croham defence of Justine Bishop and Beverley Walford could do nothing, while Charlotte Barr and Ali Roff totally controlled the centre court. Most Sporting players were Webster from HS And Debbie DeSaulles from Croham.

Injury-stricken Phoenix rose to the challenge to defeat Selsdon B 32-26, showing good teamwork and determination.

They lost goal shooter Kirsty Rogers to injury in the second quarter and were four goals adrift by the end of the third.

But they changed tactically and clawed their way back.

Sarah Streeter (player of the match) went into the centre and showed she had endurance and pace.

The top position was at stake in Division Three and the honours went to United who beat Chequers C 42-27.

United had a seven-goal lead in the first quarter.

The height of Wendy Morris at goal attack proved an advantage in the third quarter as they moved further ahead to seal victory.

Players of the match were Verona Clark (Chequers) and Jackie Penney (United).

HS Surrey team made hard work of beating New Malden 44-43 in the Premier Surrey Division.

Chequers A lost 52-44 to CMO A in the Croydon League Premier Division.

Players' Player for Chequers went to Leanne Charles and Sportsperson of the Match was Philippa Rata.

Coombe enjoyed a fine last quarter to snatch victory from Chequers B by 36-29, having fought back from six goals down after the first quarter. Klara Price was both Players' Player and Sportsperson of the Match.

And the bad news continued for Chequers as their D team lost 34-17 to All Stars.

Chequers E did manage a victory, beating Lifeline C 41-19 to continue their fine start to the season.

Chequers U15 side, the Chequettes, hosted a young CMO C side and ran out 28-6 winners.

The defensive trio of Connie Walker, Mary McNamara and Jessica de Cunha stayed close to CMO's attack throughout the game and denied them many opportunities to score.
