Zavvi, formerly Virgin Megastores, entered administration on Christmas Eve.

HMV confirmed the same staff who worked at the Croydon Zavvi branch have been offered jobs at the new store.

The site was bought for an undisclosed sum.

Gennaro Castaldo, chief press officer at HMV, said that although the stores were within a short distance of each other he was confident they could both thrive and develop their own identities.

Mr Castaldo added: "Croydon is such a large shopping area with a large flow of people coming in."

“HMV's comment (that each store will develop its own identity) is frankly lame. This bland line reveals that HMV hasn't really a clue what to do with each site and implies that it has simply blocked any true competitor from acquiring the Zavvi site. I'm not aware that HMV stores are franchises, so there really is no competition worthy of the name. The deal warrants investigation by the OFT, nomatter how many jobs have been safeguarded in the short term.

Were HMV to say, for example, that the Zavvi site was to concentrate on video (games, DVDs etc), leaving the other store to expand its range of audio products or music styles, that would be different but it hasn't.”
