O'Shea's Cup changes 'part of big picture'
Tim O'Shea said he had to look at the "bigger picture" not just the FA Cup after making several changes for last weekend's FA Cup defeat against Worthing.
The Rams boss gave starts to Jeremy Williams, Karl Murray, Chris O'Flaherty and Craig Forrester.
Striker Forrester began ahead of top scorer Gary Noel, who started on the bench but declared himself fit enough to start on the bench after suffering concussion in the previous week's victory over Godalming.
Left-winger O'Flaherty was desperate to start against his old club in the first qualifying round, while Murray started ahead of former captain Danny Waldren and Williams was given his first start of the season in place of centre-back Jon Munday.
While Noel was used as a substitute, he was still feeling the affects of his concussion.
"He came up to me in the office [after the game] and apologised that he didn't feel right when he told me he was.
"Chris O'Flaherty wanted to play against his old club, he trained really hard on Thursday and was in my earhole to play and you hope for a positive reaction.
"In midfield, we looked at Karl Murray because we hadn't played him with Chris Piper.
"I've learnt a lot and I will take full responsibility.
"There might have been changes, but I'm looking at the bigger picture and the importance of the game next week [at Eastbourne].
"Ben Godfrey was withdrawn because I've got a game next Saturday where he is suspended so I gave Scott and Gary time to play together."
On the flip side, he expects all his squad to be able to slot in and perform when called.
"I maintain that I've assembled a squad of players that have an equal right to be in the starting eleven and we'd expect changes not to affect the side.
"Looking at the game, we had three very good chances in the first few minutes.
"Worthing were resolute right across the park."
