Old Whitgiftians 12 Old Freemen's 5
OLD Whitgiftians put together back-to-back league wins for the first time this season by coming from behind to beat Old Freemen's.
The unpredictability of the division seems to be repeating itself as, despite defeat in their opening two games, Whits are now tied on six points with four other teams all vying for second place.
Freemen's missed a penalty in the opening minutes but did take the lead when their No 8 took advantage of some careless defence and scored under the posts. The easy conversion was squandered.
The hosts also missed a simple penalty but eventually levelled the score when a fine break by Les Todd led to Tom Dunsmore going over in the corner.
Whitgiftians threw away some of the advantage of playing down the slope in the second half by having two players yellow carded and off the pitch at the same time.
But the 13 remaining held out and, when they returned to a full complement, took control. A few minutes before full-time fly half Graham Jordan managed to squeeze through a gap and wriggle over the line to touch down. Todd added the extras.
Whits deserved their win but at times they looked so superior only to let themselves down with simple errors.
The club's second and third XVs also won their league games, 31-10 and 24-17 respectively.
