An application to build four houses and a block of flats that would have overshadowed neighbouring residents' homes has been unanimously rejected.

The proposed development on Warham Road, in South Croydon, had locals up in arms.

And they were thrilled when the plans were turned down by members of Croydon Council's planning committee last Thursday (November 5).

John Ferguson, 62, says his home in Raglan Court would have been left in the dark by the development.

"We were all pleasantly surprised and it was very nice that it was a unanimous decision," he said.

"We have had tremendous support from the council."

With some 18 residents present at the meeting, the committee was able to gauge the strength of feeling against the scheme.

But they cannot relax just yet as Andrew Jenner, from the applicant Terrica Land and New Homes Limited, confirmed that there would "definitely" be an appeal.

He said: "We were disappointed that there wasn't a proper debate and it seemed very much to be a pre-considered vote.

"We are quite confident that the application will get through appeal because even Croydon's chief planning officer told us he would support the plans."

But for now residents are overjoyed with the decision.

Yatin Patel, 47, whose home in Bramley Hill would have been affected by the development, said: "The proposal was just a monstrosity as it was, we are so happy it has been rejected.

"We have no problem with the land being developed – but that plan was awful.

"We have to be ready for the next round with the applicant but for now we are happy."

Residents have suggested bungalows could be built on the site for disabled war veterans injured fighting in Afghanistan.

Waddon councillor Simon Hoar, who is backing the residents' fight, added: "It was rejected because it was an overdevelopment, out of keeping with the character of the residential area.

"It was too big and in the wrong place."
