Plans to convert former motor training centre to wedding venue
AMBITIOUS plans to create a venue to cater for large Indian weddings have been lodged with Croydon Council.
The proposal to convert the disused motor industry training centre in Imperial Way is the brainchild of Raju Patel, owner of the Resham Restaurant in London Road, Norbury.

Mr Patel believes his scheme will meet the demand from across south London to provide a large hall tailored for the Indian community for traditional weddings.
The proposed venue would be able to cater for up to 800 guests.
Gennaro Picardi of Picardi architects, which is acting on behalf of Mr Patel, said the idea was also to provide a wider variety of facilities that would benefit the area.
He said that, in addition to the main hall, which could be divided into three for smaller functions, the converted building would also provide conference facilities and a bar and restaurant.
And by adding an additional floor to part of the building, a 34-bedroom hotel would be created, offering accommodation to guests attending weddings.
It is expected that the proposals will be considered by the council's planning committee in January.

“I hope that they have sufficient parking we have a couple of venues in my home town that is often brought to a standstill by the type and number of vehicles by poorly parked vehicles as so many people attend,if the parking is OK then there is no problem.”

“Seems like a very risk business venture to me. Look at all the empty pubs and buildings hosting events already in Croydon - or do the indian community know something we don't?”

“I totally stand by what I originally stated Dennett, why not use it for the good of the whole community?”

“I'm surprised nobody suggested this use for the London Dome while it was empty and unused for years. Which prompts me to wonder whether concerts could be held on Imperial Way. Hopefully it will include parking for a few hundred cars as well.
It wouldn't be the only hotel and conference centre in the area, of course, so if the owners want to include this type of business their rates will have to be very competitive.
I don't mind who uses it - Indian weddings, a mosque, boy scouts, freemasons, whoever, provided they all pay the same rates and there are no restrictions which make it impossible to do anything there except get married to an Indian.”

“Bore off, both of you. Clearly states can be used for conferences too - and in any case, how does it remotely affect you if there is a venue tailored to Indian weddings? Why the desperation to make everything a racial issue?”

“Exactly NavyCake44, they happily segregate themselves by building these so called "Indian community only" places, but then are first to complain and accuse of racism and discrimination in society. How very ironic.”

“Why not convert it into something that the WHOLE community can use?”
