ROBUST ACTION: Borough Commander Adrian Roberts is promising to get tough on young troublemakers
Traders in Upper Norwood have been given an early Christmas present by the police – in the shape of a dispersal order to get rid of troublesome yobs.
The festive gift is designed to tackle vandalism and youths who fight, shout and swear outside shops in Green Lane.
It gives police the power to move on groups of two or more people who are behaving anti-socially, or judged to be at risk of doing so.
The order covers a rectangular area from Northwood Road, up Green Lane to Maryland Road and across to Brickfield Road.
Croydon borough commander Adrian Roberts said: "This small shopping area is being abused by people with no regard for the local community.
"We won't hesitate to take robust action against anyone who fails to respond."
The action comes after residents complained to Upper Norwood Safer Neighbourhood Team on a daily basis.
And officers have pledged to continue high visibility patrols in the area, with support from the council's mobile CCTV unit.
A mosquito – a device which emits a high-pitched noise which normally only under 25s can hear – has already been installed to deter young people from congregating on the parade.
The council believes this has had an effect, but the device only covers a small area, so it is exploring the possibility of installing a second device.
The dispersal order comes into force today (Monday) and will continue for six months after which time it will be reviewed.

“The pressing need to publish this important good news story about Croydon's finest presumably meant that there was insufficient space for the almost irelevant story that two Croydon coppers have been jailed for theft. The BBC website reports that they half-inched stuff that was supposed to go to the seized evidence cupboard, so were doubly dishonest.”

“Excellent! But I much prefer the Parisian solution in which they send round a water cannon disguised as a street-cleaner and wash the scum off the streets. Its hard to be a gangsta when you're soaking wet,,”
