This is just one of the images people in Waddon have been invited to inspect as developers get ready to transform a derelict site.

Plans for 170 new homes and community facilities in Purley Way, next to the Fiveways junction, have finally gone on public display with work due to start next year.

The project was thrown into doubt last year when the council's partner developer, Hyde, pulled out of the deal to build homes and pay for community facilities, blaming the credit crunch.

But a new plan emerged in its place with the council deciding to borrow money to build the planned dry-side sports facilities and a swimming pool. Hyde will still build the homes.

Those who want to cast a critical eye over the proposals can visit two consultation sessions - one today (Friday) and tomorrow.

Residents can drop into Waddon Infants School in Purley Way today (July 3) between 6pm and 8pm or tomorrow between 11am and 2pm.

The new development will include 170 homes in two blocks up to eight storeys high. The leisure centre will sit on a public square.

There will also be a four-court sports hall, 60-station gym, two dance studios and a children's centre.

The council expects to apply for planning permission in the early autumn and construction should begin next spring.

The site, which is now almost derelict, was home to the Propeller pub and Waylands Day Centre.

The only building yet to be vacated is Red Gates School, which will be emptied over the summer.

A second consultation exhibition will take place before a planning application is lodged so residents can see how their comments in this consultation have been taken on board.

Red Gates School is moving to a new home at newly-refurbished Gilbert Scott Infant school in Farnborough Avenue, South Croydon.

It will take 16 weeks for the Waddon redevelopment to get planning consent because of the scope of what is proposed.
