A trio of cat charity rescue workers have returned from Turkey where they neutered almost 40 kittens.

Eleanor Walls, Elizabeth Rundle and Claire Wood Hill, embarked on the trip to Gocek after Mrs Walls went on a summer holiday to the seaside village and spotted maimed and sickly cats breeding.

Mrs Wall was saddened to see the stray cats leading such miserable lives so she set about raising money to buy neutering equipment to stop them breeding.

Just before Christmas the trio, who work at Purley Cattery, raised more than £1,600 for materials for their trip on January 18.

Mrs Walls, 67, who owns 12 cats, said: "The problem was even worse than we suspected.

"We trapped and neutered 39 cats, and treated three others, including giving one kitten, who was too young to be spayed, a contraceptive injection.

"Many of them had to have stitches in wounds where they had been fighting, and various abscesses treated.

"We came back exhausted but thrilled with what we had done."

The cat enthusiast says fundraising for her furry friends in Turkey is far from over.

She explained: "There are about another 150 un-neutered cats in the village, and unless we go back and neuter fairly quickly, we will be working to stand still, as they have litter after litter."

“It may be natural for cats to hunt but you have to remember they are domestic animals. The reason there are to many cats is because we let them breed.

If cats lived in the wild there would not be 8 million of them killing all the birds.

I think a cull is needed before they get out of hand and destroy all of our birds.”

“Of course its natural tom, its part of a cats DNA to hunt prey. Birds are prey. no matter how much you feed your cat, he will still hunt.

As for the comment about they scratch and bite you, yeah! because a cat sees it as play time...mine do it, you just have to know how to avoid it. or failing that..if you annoy a cat..serves you damn right.”

“They have no loyalty. If your neighbour puts out nicer food than you do, you can say good bye to your cat.

And a cat would eat you given the chance.

And they scratch and bite you.”

    “Christopher,
What¿s to sort out? I love animals, especially the birds that visit my back garden. cats in this country slaughter them by the millions each year. They are not natural as Patricia suggests, they are part of an industry that makes huge amounts of money out of them. If mankind hadn¿t stepped in the breeds wouldn¿t exist¿..and as I stated yesterday, no one needs 12 cats.”
