Lots of people are struggling to find work in the recession but one young man with learning difficulties had been trying tirelessly for three years.

However, Tony Anterio's perseverance has paid off and he says he is "over the moon" to have finally landed a job.

The 26-year-old used to be an electrical goods components assembler at the Crosfield workshop for the disabled, in Waddon, until it closed in 2006 and he was made redundant.

Despite constantly applying for new jobs, and approaching companies asking to be given a chance, he could not find employment.

The disappointment turned to joy, though, when he was given the shot he has been hoping for by Croydon's Appliance Reuse Centre, which provides work for unemployed and disabled people.

The centre, in Grafton Road, Croydon, collects and restores appliances like washing machines, before selling them on for a reasonable price.

Tony will be helping in the showroom and making deliveries.

After starting work last week, he said: "I'm over the moon I've got a job.

"It was very disheartening to keep on trying for jobs and not getting anywhere.

"I've lost count of how many times I tried, but no one wanted me to work for them."

Although all he wanted was "a chance to prove myself" Tony had been finding it impossible to get a foot in the door.

He added: "It was boring not working, I like doing a good job. Plus it gives me independence, and I meet new people.

"I would spend most of my days hanging out with my friends, but after three years even having days off with your mates can be a bit dull."

Tony, of Woodcote Valley Road, Purley, contacted the centre after seeing an article about its work in the Croydon Advertiser.

"I leapt at the chance to get back into work - it teaches me new skills, and I like the routine of it," he said.

"I'm probably the only person who looks forward to Monday mornings."

Merrick Iszatt, the centre's operations manager, says Tony is a welcome addition to the team.

"He's really upbeat, and has a great attitude, so we are very pleased to have him," he explained.

"He's a hard worker, as soon as he finishes one task he tries to find another. We hope to have him with us for a long time."
