A road has been cordoned off in South Croydon this afternoon (Friday) after smoke started coming out of a manhole cover.

Firefighters from Croydon Fire Station were called to Aberdeen Road around midday.

It is understood the problem is now being dealt with by electricity engineers and the road has been hit by power cuts.

“Depending on whether the whole of Aberdeen road was closed it wouldn't help anyone trying to get to South Croydon Station by car with St Peter's Road being one way north to south!”
