Schoolgirl wins RSPCA photo award for snap of her pet lizard
Animal lover Lucy Best has scooped a national photography award with a picture of her pet lizard, Steg.
The 13-year-old scooped the RSPCA Young Photographer People's Choice Award after deciding to enter the competition to help raise money for her favourite charity.
Every time someone voted for her picture to win the contest, the RSPCA made 61p – and she got more votes than anybody else.
Lucy, who lives in Coulsdon Court Road, Coulsdon, hopes to become a vet.
She said: "There are lots of animals that don't have any homes and the RSPCA looks after them.
"It was quite a surprise to win and I didn't expect to get this far. I saw the other entries and they were all really good."
Throughout the summer, Lucy used her dad Simon's top-of-the-range camera to take a series of wildlife photographs.
And it was one of these – the picture of Steg – that won her the competition.
Lucy is a pupil at Greenacre School for Girls, in Banstead.

“But does a 13 year old girl need to know this, such things should not need to be passed on to children.”

“Sadly reading her "quote" saying 'There are lots of animals that don't have any homes and the RSPCA looks after them' she is going to be disappointed when she reads the RSPCA annual reports and finds out how many animals they put down for economic reasons, unlike other charities that do not destroy unwanted pets.”
