Given how much SD loved Bar R (particularly the food) it came as a great shock to discover it had closed down earlier this year.

For a long time SD wanted to visit TXT Bar, but was unable to cross the threshold, feeling it was some sort of betrayal of the previous bar.

But how glad SD was to finally overcome any regret at the loss of Bar R - TXT Bar turned out to be a very worthy replacement.

Inside all is bright and modern - the layout may be pretty much the same (without the raised area at the front), but the feel is completely different to Bar R's dark interior.

Swanky glass ball chandeliers adorn the bar and smart seating areas invite drinkers to relax with a drinks menu.

As SD visited immediately after work for a much-needed reward after a busy day, the bar was fairly quiet which meant quick service and attentive staff.

SD's friend was making a second visit to TXT after a date earlier in the week and confirmed the bar is much more popular later in the evening.

Luckily it still isn't well-known enough to be heaving on a weekend, meaning it keeps its chilled-out atmosphere for the moment.

SD's only problem was with the sign outside, and possibly the name, which let down the rest of the bar's image a little.

Well-presented drinks menus featuring cocktails and a huge range of spirits let you make up your mind from the comfort of a table.

Cocktails are mostly priced at £7 - not cheap, but if you're looking for somewhere to enjoy one on a special occasion, SD thinks you could do a lot worse than here.

Wine and beer prices are more reasonable and have equally good selections.

Bar snacks and small meals are also available, although SD held back on this occasion, still sad at the thought of no more cheap Thai food.

With the twinkling lights of the lovely Tree House right opposite, this is becoming one of the best areas in Croydon to enjoy a non-80s-themed night out.
