A charity day to raise money for a Selsdon church hall and remember a popular parishioner, has been a roaring success.

St John the Divine Church, in Upper Selsdon Road, held a craft fair, barn dance and musical evening in memory of Roger Slade, a loyal parishioner who passed away last year.

The fun days, held on July 18 and 19, raised around £1,000 which will go to the church's hall restoration fund, as the hall is sorely in need of a revamp.

David Moulton, one of the organisers, said: "It was a great success, apart from when we had to cancel a barbecue – although we can blame the weather for that one!

"Everyone really enjoyed the day, and people were asking when the next craft fair is.

"I think we could see another of those as they seem popular."
