A POPULAR nun who worked tirelessly to help the homeless has died after suffering a massive stroke.

Sister Joan O'Donoghue, 76, dedicated the last 25 years of her life to helping the needy in New Addington.

In 1990 she founded Good Shepherd Mission to the Homeless, a weekly soup run which distributes food, clothes and companionship to the homeless around London.

She was awarded an MBE for her work with homeless people and the community of New Addington.

Close friend and fellow volunteer David Carroll, from Gravel Hill, Croydon, says everyone who knew the former teacher will be devastated.

"It's very upsetting, we're all in shock," he said.

"Whoever came into contact with her could not help but like her, she had an impish sense of humour.

"She was extremely broadminded and knowledgeable."

Cathy Joyce, who knew the former teacher for 25 years and was a fellow volunteer, said Sister Joan was a "rock" to the community.

"There are not enough good words to describe her," she said.

"She was kind, generous, loveable and made everyone feel that they were loved.

"I spent the last 20 minutes of her life with her and thanked her for everything she had done for me."
