IT SEEMS Amelia Williamson-Moran is not the only person in Croydon to have grown a huge sunflower this summer.

Last week we told how six-year-old Amelia had an eight foot tall plant in the garden of her home in Spring Park Road, Shirley.

Now other Advertiser readers have come forward to show off their giant sunflowers.

Ali Azmath, 63, is pictured next to his sunflower in Littleheath Road, Selsdon.

He said: "It's nearly nine foot. I didn't think it would grow so huge."

Theresa Rebeiro, who lives in Carolina Road, Thornton Heath estimates her sunflower is between nine and ten feet tall.

Ms Rebeiro, 63, said: "It started growing in May and it grew slowly.

"Then suddenly it shot up and in a matter of about 15 days it grew that big."

Riley Broughton, nine, had to stand on a stepladder to have his picture taken with his flower in Cator Crescent, New Addington.

He started growing the plant at school and his mum Tina Banham says it is now 11 feet tall – and still growing.

She said: "It was only a couple of inches when he brought it home.

"We didn't even think it was going to survive. Now we've had to tie it to the drainpipe at the side of the shed to keep it in place.

"The other night it was windy and I was out the window at 4am to make sure it was still there."

Her daughter Isabel Broughton, four, is also green-fingered and has tomato plants and a vegetable patch.
