A soldier from the 2nd Battalion The Rifles will be laying a wreath at the war memorial in Katharine Street, Croydon, tomorrow (Wednesday).

It will be in memory of Rifleman Danny Simpson, from Shirley, a member of the battalion who was killed in Helmand province, in Afghanistan, in July.

At the end of last month the battalion marched through the town centre in a parade to mark their homecoming and to thank the people of Croydon for the support and sympathy shown after Rifleman Simpson's death.

Prior to the march, The Rifles were granted the freedom of the borough.

Tomorrow's wreath-laying will form part of the Armistice Day commemoration taking place at the memorial at 11am to remember the end of the First World War.
