The Shirley soldier killed by a bomb in Afghanistan was "the best bloke you could every want to meet," his best friend said on Wednesday.
Rifleman Peter Sherlock was laying a wreath in honour of 20-year-old Danny Simpson, at Croydon's war memorial in Katharine Street, as part of the Armistice Day commemoration.
This was placed on behalf of the 2nd Battalion The Rifles that Danny, who died in July, served with.
Mayor of Croydon Margaret Mead, the Royal British Legion, the police and Fire Brigade also laid wreaths to remember the fallen victims of the First World War.
