Southern orders 40 new train carriages
RAIL operator Southern announced on Friday it had signed an order for 40 more carriages.
The deal brings the total number of new carriages ordered in the last year by the Croydon company to 170.
The additional carriages will provide increased capacity on the Southern network from December 2014 and will help to meet demand for extra rolling stock needed as part of the Thameslink expansion programme.
The 40 carriages are an addition to the 130-carriage order won by Bombardier at the end of 2011.

Southern also has a further procurement competition for 116 new carriages as part of the Thameslink programme. This open competition will include an option for a further 140 coaches.
Chris Burchell, managing director of Southern, said: "We are delighted to be able to order these additional vehicles which will provide much-needed capacity on our network."

“This is of course a joke we have been waiting for new trains to be ordered for First "****ital" Connect for years the government claimed to have ordered the trains at least a year ago but it would appear that the contract hasn't even been signed yet.”
