This is Croydon

This was billed as Errol Brown's Farewell Tour. Well, all I can say is that I hope he follows in the footsteps of many other singers who have gone down the same route and has second thoughts about bowing out of the live performance spotlight for good.

A packed Fairfield lapped up every one of the 90 minutes he was on stage, reminiscing about the early days (including his famous white trousers) and keeping everyone entertained with his charismatic charm and soothing vocals on all those memorable soul/disco numbers.

You forget quite how many hits there have been over the four decades of his career, each delivered with the voice that really is as warming and welcome as Hot Chocolate on a chilly evening.

Everyone's A Winner, Brother Louie, It Started With A Kiss, the heartfelt I'll Put You Together Again and Full Monty signature tune You Sexy Thing all got the fans up and dancing.

The atmosphere was great and Brown came across as a regular, nice guy. It will be a shame if this really was his swansong.

The opener was Yolanda Brown (no relation) a fine jazz saxophonist who produced some steamy sounds – though I'm not sure that the people who signed up for Errol Brown's style of music will have gone for this.
