Two young women have been arrested on suspicion of assaulting tram staff in a horrifying attack in Croydon town centre.

Two ticket inspectors were attacked on a packed tram on a Saturday evening between Centrale and West Croydon, with one woman inspector dragged off the tram when it stopped.

She was left with whiplash and a black eye and the other, a man, was left with bruising to the hand.

British Transport Police are now appealing for witnesses to the attack, which happened on October 4 at about 9.10pm.

BTP Constable Mark Walden said: "It would appear two members of staff were assaulted following a revenue-related matter on a tram travelling between Centrale and West Croydon on the Saturday night.

"CCTV shows one of the inspectors was dragged off the tram at West Croydon as part of the assault.

"We are continuing our investigation into this serious incident. After viewing CCTV it is evident that there were numerous other passengers on board the tram, and at the tram stop at the time of the assault, and we believe they may be able to assist us with our inquiries.

"We are appealing to any members of the public who may have witnessed the assault to please come forward with any information they may have."

Witnesses can contact PC Walden on 0208 253 7650.

The two women, aged 19 and 20, have been bailed until December pending further police inquiries.

“I am a ticket inspector though not for the tram/TFL.
I really need to be hard skinned to do the job as daily i face aggression & threats of violence.
Today was pretty bad, i had about 22 arguments all with ticketless passengers who swore at me and called me every name under the sun because i asked to see their tickets which they do not have.
No one wishes to pay, they refuse to pay penalty charges and end up being prosecuted, very deservantly.
People talk down to me as if i am stupid and beneath them while i am University educated and far more sensible than they are.
    They should have more respect.
I respect everyone and treat everyone fairly, i do not penalise people unfairly or refuse my name details as mentioned in other comments.
The truth is fare dodging is rife, i come across 100-150 a day during my shift, they either have no tickets, stolen freedom passes robbed off the elderly, stolen Oyster cards, invalid tickets (other routes, other zones, expired date) or are travelling on child tickets whilst being adults.
There are hundreds each day passing through where i work with child tickets and using them through the barrier.
Why pay £13.80 (peak) or £7.00 for a travelcard when you can pay £2.00 ??
Then there are those with no ticket who threaten violence and scream and swear like mad people forcing their way through the barriers, usually by shoving people out of the way.
Many when challenged seem to think they have an automatic right to free travel and refuse to pay greeting any requests for payment with a mouthful of foul abuse sometimes racial or very insulting, people have made disgusting remarks about my wife or mother saying they are going to rape them or calling them hoares, they disgust me and make me feel sick, sometimes i feel like smacking them one so hard their face cracks in two.
To do so would cost me my job as we are not allowed to physically touch anyone, even fare evading criminals.
Some of my colleagues refer to passengers as animals and believe me there are plenty who behave worst than animals daily.
It is a tough job and many have left or switched jobs for something less in the frontline as the job is very demanding and we get little thanks, just lots of abuse.
I have lost count of how many death threats i have received and there are plenty of lunatics around the area who would do what they say they will do.
A former colleague was once recognized by someone he fined and attacked in the town centre in front of his family.
Can you believe all this happens all over a paper ticket costing a few pounds !!
I enjoy my job and will continue to help those who need help and show discretion in many cases but i will crucify anyone who thinks they can do what they like to the detriment of the company and passengers and they deserve what ever is coming their way !
Passengers complain of high prices, so much revenue is lost to fare dodgers, that is one reason why prices are so high as selfish people think others should pay more so they can travel for nothing and they have no shame whatsoever.
It is a thankless job but i feel i am serving justice when i stop fare evaders and i have no qualms about seeing them penalised.
Personally, i use discretion and let genuine passengers off, allowing them the chance to pay the correct fare and even letting them go with a warning if they are unable to do so but are really genuine.
So please do not label all of us as little Hitlers or Blakeys, i do my job to the best of my ability and take pride in my job, i do not slack and am professional at all times providing excellent customer service.
I am sure many TFL inspectors also provide a similiar service and should be respected for the tough job they need to do daily in a hostile environment among hostile people.”
