WHAT WASTE: Councillor Jane Avis says it is costing too much money to reopen the Portland Road toilets

A frustrated councillor claims taxpayers' cash is being flushed "down the toilet", amid plans to reopen public loos in South Norwood.
Labour opposition councillor Jane Avis says spending £28,000 refurbishing the toilets on Portland Road is a waste of money.
She thinks it would cost Croydon Council far less to reopen another set of toilets at Norwood Junction.
More than £50,000 was invested by the council's former Labour administration as part of a joint venture with Southern Rail to install the train station's loos.
But Cllr Avis claims when the Conservatives gained control of the council, they did not keep up the pressure on the rail company to keep the facilities in working order.
Both sets of toilets were closed after being plagued by vandals and drug users – the Portland Road loo shut several years ago, but the Norwood junction lavatories only a few months ago.
"Taxpayers' money is being thrown down the toilet", Cllr Avis said. "They have a responsibility to maintain the toilets by the station or at least force the train operator to do so.
"They were state-of-the-art but nobody maintained them."
Croydon Council announced plans to spend £28,000 on providing "new" toilet facilities for South Norwood last April.
This will be spent refurbishing the toilets under the bridge on Portland Road, which are due to reopen later this year.
One trader, though, has welcomed the council's choice.
Richard Hough, who owns the garage Autoclutch, opposite Norwood Junction, said: "My business is opposite these toilets and I'm here 60-hours-a -week, they are a waste of money. They're totally in the wrong place, they're the wrong design and no thought went into them.
"They should never have gone there in the first place.
"The ones at Portland Road are accessible to Portland Road and the High Street. They're going to fill a need."

“I tried to put a link to a story about Croydons Most Expensive Mayor, Jane Avis.
When I tried to post this before it was moderated by the advertiser, I assume because it is critical of a Labour Mayor (they have donated money to the Labour party in the past).
Jane Avis, who lives in South Croydon (nowhere near South Norwood) cost more than any other Mayor in history. At a time when we are all cutting back do we really want someone as our Councillor who treats us with such contempt. A woman who is quite happy taking as much of our money as she can get hold of.
Not only was she the most expensive mayor ever, she refused to raise any money for charities. Most Mayors raise hundreds of thousands of pounds during their time as Mayor and see it as part of their civic duty to do so. There are plenty of decent charities in South Norwood. Doesn't she think South Norwood charities deserve her support. It doesn't look like it does it?
She only seems to get involved with local issues when there is an election looming. Does she think we are stupid. I do hope that this despicable person is dumped by the electorate in May so we don't have to continue to put up with her.”

“I read with interest the article in the Croydon Advertiser regarding the toilets at Norwood Junction Station. I note that the Labour councillor for South Norwood (also the Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for South Croydon) perceives that the Conservative administration are wasting money by opening the Portland Road toilets. I would have thought that Cllr Avis as someone who is concerned about the environment would have been delighted that we are bringing back into use facilities that have been tried and tested in the past. These toilets will serve not only the District Centre but also Portland Road. I have always wondered what thought process was engaged when the decision was made to punch holes in the facade of a classic Victorian station that is fortunately still intact and install galvanised toilet doors that would not look out of place in a prison. A a resident of South Norwood, (unlike Cllr Avis) I care passionately about the area, I want the very best and destroying part of our heritage is not the way to do that. The toilets at the station were always a mistake not only asthetically but the very fact that they were not managed and were opened 24 hours. The toilets at Portland Road, will be opened early morning and closed in the evening and they will be inspected and cleaned every day. Cllr Clancy and I continue to lobby for the station toilets to be closed and for the railway authorities to provide toilets on the station. This blot on the landscape will hopefully be bricked up and the station will be restored to its former glory.”

“I've never noticed the station toilets, open since they've been installed, And while Coun Avis comments about the waste of money, she's right £50.000 on toilets that are kept closed is a waste of money, and as for the Torys not sorting the problem out, she is a councillor for South Norwood and has made no attempt to sort the problem out either. Is this the pot calling the kettle black.”

“It's great that there are to be public lavatories available in the Portland Road again.
However, there should also be some in the station at Norwood Junction. The automatic ones were a poor idea from the start. On platform One there is room for a properly designed and run lavatory where there used to be a news vendors stall. Any one got any money left over from the coming forthnight of Olympic Games or the rail fare increases?”

“There is a big difference between Richard. Who has served the community he lives in for many years and Cllr Avis who lives in South Croydon and has no connections to South Norwood at all.
p.s I thought his xmas tree looked great.”

“How dare you say Richard's christmas tree was trashy. You obviously either have no taste or are a total scrooge! Long live his smell of petroleum,South Norwood would not be the same without it.Richard does a bloody good job in our community and fights for what he and hundreds belive in,he has also helped many youngsters with special needs, but guess what he hasn't been in the papers for that !”

“Well lets get the true story out.
These toilets where installled some 4 years and 4 months ago. They did not do check to see wether the floor inside was at the same level. It not!!
Hence when they carried on installing them they had to build a ramp!!! Taking away the footpath across the front of the station.I was led to believe the cost was £80,000.
When they opened they had a few teething problems.
But these just got worse!!!
They kept having to call out the engineer to repair the fail safe system. This cut all power and left the locking mechanism and cleaning system tripped out..People did try and use them, but without the automatic cleaning taking place they became a health risk. They stank!!!!
State of art!!!!!
More like JUST A STATE!!!!!!
The toilets are unsightly and totally out of keeping with the victorian frontage of the Norwood Junction Station.
They have been locked up for approximately 9 months now.
How is that money well spent?”

“Dear Mr J Jones ... Mr Hough is a respected businessman who has done a great deal for this area over the 15 years I have lived here (taken on apprentices and supported local businesses, two amongst the many things he has done). No matter what you think of his Christmas trees (which, incidentally weren't trashy), I'd like to know what you have done to help South Norwood in this time? I think he has a right to comment, given that his business is located directly opposite the relevant (in)conveniences ...”
