TRANSPORT bosses are considering removing a traffic signal on the Purley Way.

The pelican crossing is situated by Waddon Park Avenue and Alton Road.

A report from Transport for London reads: "The pedestrian demand for the site is relatively low.

"Due to regular congestion in the area, traffic often blocks the crossing, which means that it does not provide a clear and unobstructed place to cross.

"As well as this, the site also has a history of non-compliance from motorists, which resulted in the installation of a red light camera to prevent motorists from ignoring the red traffic signals.

"While stricter enforcement could reduce non-compliance, this would not guarantee an improvement in safety for pedestrians using the crossing, and it is considered that the safety of pedestrians would be better served by directing more vulnerable users to the signal-controlled junction 65 metres to the south."

A consultation is being run until February 9.
