The tram was travelling at low speed at the time, he added, and no passengers or pedestrians were hurt.
The tram involved remained upright.
London Tramlink services are now suspended from Wellesley Road to Sandilands while TfL investigates the incident.
The spokesman added: "We are working to restore services as soon as possible.
"In the meantime, tickets are being accepted on local bus services."
A British Transport Police spokesman confirmed officers had helped Tramlink staff deal with the incident.
The Rail Accident Branch will be investigating the circumstances of the derailment, he said.

“I think what this was where they had a system in place for the trams to switch over between tracks to travel in and out of East Croydon when the works were going on and now its come out of it, its got confused so switched back earlier than it should have done. Still, at least it remained upright and no one was hurt.”

“We slummed it on the bus this morning. I thought it was misaligned tracks when I first heard, but then saw it was nowhere near where the tracks had been replaced. My thoughts now (as a mere woman) are that the points moved/were moved after the front of the tram had passed over them. Thank goodness nobody was hurt.”

“Coz the tram can't go back to Sandilands without "wrong roading" so it's able to keep a full service from Addington/Elmers End/Beckenham to Sandilands as there is points there to "turn back"”

“Wish I had known before I left for work, I wouldn't have worn 4" heels! it was a long walk from Sandilands, don't know why we couldn't have gone to Lebanon Rd!!!”
