Labour has been accused of dirty tricks in the run-up to tomorrow's (Thursday's) Waddon by-election.

As part of its campaign the party is claiming the Tory council has a secret plan to build an incinerator at its Factory Lane recycling site.

But the Tories have firmly denied the claim, and are accusing Labour of scare-mongering to boost its votes.

Labour leader Tony Newman is defiant in his claim, however, ahead of what could be a tight election.

"What I'm saying is the Tories need to stop lying and come clean," he said.

Tory Phil Thomas, who is the council's cabinet member for environment and highways, is outraged at Labour's allegation.

He said: "Basically what they are trying to do is frighten the electorate by scare-mongering and unfortunately a number of elderly people have rung us asking if this is true.

"They are desperate. We would not consider building an incinerator.

"As long as you have a Conservative council you won't have an incinerator in Croydon."

Croydon is a member of the South London Waste Partnership (SLWP) made up of Kingston, Merton and Sutton councils.

They team up on waste issues and Mr Newman claims an SLWP document indicates the Factory Lane site is being seriously considered for an incinerator.

Cllr Thomas, though, doubts the site is even big enough for an incinerator.

Green party spokesman Shasha Khan has backed the Tories in the row.

He said: "We are not for one minute defending the Conservative council's approach because they along with Merton, Sutton and Kingston councils may opt for an incinerator.

"But what Labour have done is taken a quote completely out of context in order to win last minute votes.

"It's disgraceful behaviour and those involved should be thoroughly ashamed. This form of politics is outdated and needs to come to an end."

However, in the run-up to the election the Tories have come under fire themselves over their tactics.

Last week they were accused of courting voters unfairly with a well-timed announcement of £7 million of funding being made available for a new Waddon swimming pool.

Some cynics question whether this is ever likely to come to fruition.

I wonder what the "nit nurse" has to say on the subject!
Are you the Focus foreign affairs correspondent, i.e the Tamil tigers situation in Sri Lanka?

“Why Is there so much trouble and potential for misrepresentation over the incinerator?Because the consultation is being made deliberately obscure and very coy.Unfortunately for everyone incinerators have very large plumes (see my google map, Beddington toxic rose plume).I have no idea where any incinerator may be built, but Beddington does seem a very likely centre because of its other links. The map shows the potential air pollution spread (particulates etc.).An industry preferred size of unit creates about two miles worth of four-lane motorway pollution 24/7.I have a very horrible feeling, party squabbling aside, that this question will come back to haunt all of us soon.”

“The project clearly exists - you can google south london waste partnership and find the papers for yourself. Or you can download them from the Croydon Labour web site.

What I do not understand is why the Tories have denied it so strongly when it is an actual project.

I understand why the Tories are upset at the Labour tactics, but it is Croydon Council who has helped put together this PFI bid. The last time I looked, Croydon Council was run by the er Conservatives?”

“The minutes of the 23 October 2008 meeting of the South London Waste Partnership Committee refers to "electricty sales" in the context of the new facility. Perhaps those Tories claiming that lies have been told will explain how this will be done, if not by incineration.”

“Tony Newman loves dirty campaigning and is addicted to telling lies and should apologise for the hurt he¿s caused, but he doesn¿t care.”

“While we retain the discredited party political system (as opposed to requiring all candidates to be independent), this sort of negative campaigning is inevitable. I dare say that the Tories would have done exactly the same had the positions been reversed. The Lib Dems, too, engage in sniping at government and Opposition alike, rather than promoting positive initiatives.

Party politics and the accompanying whip system are an affront to democracy, as narrow party lines are peddled by all members. Those who refuse (Skinner, Pelling) are derided as maverick. The Commons, for example, should spend less time examining the mote in the eye of the Lords and attend to the beam in its own eye. As for local councillors, they really are too insignificant and unimportant to bother about.

Politics is no longer driven by a desire to serve but a desire by individuals to see how much they can get out of it, be it financial or in terms of self-aggrandisement and kudos. The arrant conceit of national politicians and the unsupportable self-importance of local councillors (all too often documented on this site) put people off voting, as tomorrow's feeble turnout will attest. I once stood for election at county council level and even I sometimes find myself asking "What's the point?".”

“This is all Tony Newman's doing. He does it all the time. All that comes out of his mouth is lie after lie after lie. You only need to read what he says in the local papers. Take that recent row over the Tory leaflet in Woodside that was in the advertiser. Getting a Labour party member to complain and lie to the local press. Just the sort of crap you expect from Tony Newman.”
