About 40 people had to leave Virgin Active gym and about 200 people were rushed out of Grant's following the incident, at about 11.02am.
More than 40 firefighters from Croydon and surrounding stations attended the scene, a spokesman from London Fire Brigade said, along with officers trained in dealing with chemical incidents.
A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police confirmed the incident was not being treated as suspicious, and a spokesman for London Ambulance Service said paramedics had not been called.
Virgin Active sent a text message to all members informing them the gym was closed 'due to a maintenance issue at the club'.
The gym was re-opened at about 3.30pm.
A spokesman said: "Virgin Active health club in Croydon was evacuated this morning, as a precaution, while the local fire brigade investigated an odour involving cleaning products.
"The club has now reopened. No members or staff were affected.
"Virgin Active apologises for any inconvenience caused to members in the short period the club was closed."
