DAVID Weir suffered BT Paralympic World Cup disappointment as a mystery virus ended his hopes of double gold in Manchester on Tuesday.

The 30-year-old double Paralympic gold medallist had high hopes of claiming top spot on the podium in the 800m and 1500m in Manchester.

But Weir – who finished third in the London Marathon earlier this year after suffering a punctured tyre – was well below his best.

Switzerland's Marcus Hug pipped him to the line in the 800m, denying him the gold, while Weir was out of the medals in 1500m with a disappointing fifth-placed finish.

"It's not as if I don't know what the problem is," said Weir, who clocked 1:38.92 minutes in the 800m before crossing the line in the 1500m in a disappointing time of 3:19.21 minutes

"I've just had the doctor check me over and I've got a temperature so I've picked up some sort of virus which I didn't realise until I came here.

"I was a bit flat all week in training and I haven't been feeling myself. I didn't feel right going into the races and there was just nothing in the tank. The week before this one, my training had been going really well but I've just felt a bit down over the weekend.

"But the doctor has confirmed that I have been fighting some kind of infection – at least I know it wasn't me.

"It's just one of those things. This is the first illness I've had all year which is pretty good for me."

Weir, from Wallington, opened his track season by winning double gold at the Knowsley Disability Athletics Challenge in Liverpool last weekend.

And with the World Championships in New Zealand on the horizon in early 2011, Weir admits his below-par showing Manchester showing will not ruin his 2010 track season.

"This is the first time I've felt flat to be honest this year but I'll take a few days off now, get better and then start building up again," added Weir. "I've been pretty pleased with the year so far. The marathon was a bit of a disappointment – I felt good going into that.

"My track season always seems to start slow but at least I know it wasn't the real me here. I've definitely got more to come."

The BT Paralympic World Cup ends on May 31 and features the world's leading international Paralympic athletes in athletics, seven-a-side football, swimming and wheelchair basketball.
