A 37-YEAR-OLD woman has been hospitalised after a serious assault in an alleyway.

The victim was found in George Street, Croydon at around 11.40pm on Tuesday night with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

A police spokesman said: "The full extent of the injuries is not known at this stage. Inquiries continue."

Tony Doncaster, 76, spoke to police at the scene on Wednesday morning. He said: "At 5am this morning (Wednesday) they said on the radio that George Street was closed down due to an incident.

"I went down at about 10.30am to go to Nationwide and I asked a copper what happened. He said there was an incident down the alleyway and they staggered out down George Street.

"There were a couple of forensics that came out of there too. They wouldn't really tell me a lot."

Anyone with information is asked to call the police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
