A woman suffered a suspected broken pelvis after sledging down a steep hill and smashing into a tree.

Firefighters were called in to rescue the victim, who is believed to be in her 40s, from woods off Upper Selsdon Road, at around 3.40pm today (Sunday).

She had been sledging down a hill, near to the Croham Hurst golf course, when she crashed into the tree.

A friend called for an ambulance, but the paramedics did not have the necessary equipment to take the injured woman to the roadside.

Firefighters from Croydon Fire Station were called to the scene and were able to lift the victim into a special basket stretcher before escorting her to the ambulance.

The woman was taken to Mayday Hospital suffering from a suspected broken pelvis.

A Fire Brigade spokesman said: "It was a successful rescue. I would remind residents if you’re going sledging to make sure you have somebody with you with a means of communication so you’re not stuck in a remote area."

“Can someone explain why being in your 40s makes you more likely to have a freak accident than if you were in your 20s or younger, as seems to be implied by some on here?”

“I am shocked at some of the nasty comments I have just read, in particular you Jonathan and Anon Anon. How dare you make nasty comments about something when you clearly don't know the facts, this was a nasty 'ACCIDENT' If you had children you'd understand that any good parent takes their children sledging when its snowing. Get off your high horse and get real.”

“This message is mainly for Miss. AnonAnon! Thank you for your most charming comments on this most gogeous, kind hearted amazing Mother who decided to spend a family day with her children having fun in the snow. She is now in hospital with a broken pelvis and on morphine and she`ll probably be on crutches for the next 3 months. so beaky....if you have nothing else better to do than blog nasty comments I strongly suggest you start getting yourself a life my darling!”

“very silly thing to do to be honest, and there are a few more open spaces like Lloyds park which has areas where you can sledge without hitting trees BUT I do feel sorry and hope she recovers as no doubt the lady in question is in terrible pain. Next time she'll probably think twice before showing off to her family (hehe).
Certainly at my age it is something I certainly wouldn't do and I am in my 30's.”

“It was a freak accident whist enjoying some quality family time. Not sure how someone can conclude the accident was the result of childish and irresponsible behaviour; are all road accidents the result of stupidity? She is a lovely lady who is truly grateful to the wonderful emergency services that came to her rescue. Thank you to all the well wishers; may you all continue to enjoy life.. but don't tell Anon; he/she/it may want to tax you!”

“You are a very lucky lady you could have killed yourself. When he was eighteen my son broke his leg sledging down a steep hill on Farthing downs. He had to have a pin inserted in his ankle at Mayday, what a good hospital.”

“She should be fined for childish behaviour. And made to pay the cost she receives in medical care.

A big woman like her acting like a child, what is the world coming to?”

    “Hope she recovers well!

I'm a tad older but we bought a new sled last lot of snow and pelted down Riddlesdown, luckily without incident. As much as you look all round when sledding you can't allow for lumps and tree roots under the snow.

    Take care!”

“What is wrong with older people going sledging my mother is in her 60's and enjoys it! Accidents happen every day but you shouldn't stop doing things that are fun. It was the womans choice to go sledging and I hope she recovers soon.”
