Work begins on Morrisons on Purley Way in Croydon
SUPERMARKET giant Morrisons has begun construction on its first store in Croydon.
The store, at Fiveways Retail Park on the Purley Way, is expected to begin trading by the middle of next year and will create 300 full and part-time jobs.
It was first revealed in July 2010 that Morrisons had bought an 11.3-acre site in a deal with retail business Kingfisher.
Waddon ward councillor Simon Hoar has given a cautious welcome to Morrisons, although he has concerns about the design of the building and the volume of traffic.

Cllr Hoar said: "The concern is whether Fiveways can take it.
"Rush hour through Fiveways is gridlock. An extra big store could cause a significant increase in traffic."
Morrisons says it would like to employ as many local people as possible and that, typically, the majority of staff will live within a three-mile radius of the store.
Richard Haynes, development executive at Morrisons, said: "We are looking forward to opening next year and are delighted to be in a position to offer 300 jobs in the store to local people with specialist training opportunities."
