A 41-year-old man was punched unconscious by a gang of thugs who stole £200 and two bags of Christmas presents from him.

The victim and his 45-year-old partner were making their way home from Selhurst train station when they were attacked at around 6.30pm on Sunday (December 13).

They were walking along Saxon Road when they noticed a group of four males sitting on a wall outside a block of flats.

As the couple walked past them, one of the men asked them if they wanted to buy any drugs but they declined and carried on walking.

One of the suspects approached the male victim from behind before punching him in the face and knocking him unconscious.

Another suspect grabbed his partner's handbag, which contained around £200 in cash, a mobile phone and a Halifax bank card.

They also stole two bags of Christmas presents before fleeing down the street.

The female victim recognised the suspects as the same men who had spoken to them just minutes before the attack.

Her partner suffered a broken jaw which required surgery and is likely to need further treatment for his injuries.

DC Ian Rasul, of Croydon CID, said: "This was a particularly violent attack upon two innocent members of the public making their way home after a day out.

"Not only has the attack resulted in them having their personal possessions stolen it has left the male victim with serious injuries that he is still receiving treatment for."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Croydon CID on 020 8659 1377 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

“robking, you must live in the same world as Anne.

I agree with the3rd. Scourched earth tactics needed in Selhurst. We'll get rid of a whole lot of thugs and layabouts, so yeah it will reduce crime!!! Cant argue with that!!”

“The 3rd - What a silly comment, communities need to tackle crime and to help the police, the police can't do it on their own.

We also need a new government that is prepared to be tough on criminals and cares much more about the rights of law abiding citizens than about those of criminals.

If you razed the whole area to the ground, do you think that crime will go away? if there is trouble there then we need to tackle it.

Anyone who thought like you would knock down a wall just because it has graffiti on it.”

“Keith you stupid sarcastic fool, it's always easy to attack the police when awful attacks like this happen. You have to look further and realise it's the government of this country that is making it harder for the courts to make the right decission in sentencing, so releasing alot of these thugs onto our streets, that should be inside. When you read stories about alot of these thugs that go onto kill and their previous records are released to show a ridiculous amount of convictions. You ask why have the courts released these thugs? GOVERNMENT GUIDELINES, making courts weak, making the police job one big circle.”

“Selhurst - Another ghetto town that needs exterminating. It is a breeding ground for thugs, crooks, drunks and junkies.

Apart from Crystal Palace, there is nothing nice about that place.”

“The reason that no colour is indicated in the story is that the attack occurred in Selhurst by drug dealers who would only attack if there are more than 1 in number or are armed. What colour do you think they are going to be?”

    “Scum have no color.
They get shot - few grieve.

Why the system lets more than a very few be scum?

What happen to community, family, policing, justice and that?

Are we seeking to develop another generation of scum? Look at the laws now.”
