A TASTY concept that started life as a joke on Twitter has developed into a real-life breakfast club to bring the community together.

People from across the area are being invited to the first-ever meeting of an innovative new group aiming to bring people closer over food.

Jonny Rose and nutritional therapist Susie White will be joining members of the so-called Purley Breakfast Club, which has so far only existed on social networking site Twitter, from 9-11am at Cafe Nino, in Brighton Road, on April 30.

The pair are hoping that encouraging people from across south London and East Surrey to enjoy a healthy breakfast together at an independent business in the town will help to strengthen the neighbourhoods still further.

"This is a great example of a new and innovative way for people to come together through social media," said 24-year-old Mr Rose, who grew up in Purley.

"I'm looking forward to people from all over the area meeting face-to-face for the first time and getting to know each other over scrambled eggs on toast."

Purley Breakfast Club began as a joke on microblogging website Twitter, when Mr Rose began posting what he was eating each morning and Croydon Advertiser reporter Joanna Till tagged his posts with the hashtag #PurleyBreakfastClub.

People from across Purley, Coulsdon, Croydon and East Surrey then got involved, tweeting about their breakfasts every day and using the same hashtag to group all the messages together.

Purley Dinner Club then developed, with people posting photographs of their evening meals and swapping tips and recipes.

Miss White, who lives in Reigate and runs nutritional therapy company Blue Broccoli, feels the groups encouraged healthy eating. "Because we are sharing their meals online it makes us think more about what we are putting into our bodies each day," the 35-year-old added.

"It also inspires creativity when you see a picture of a beautiful meal someone has just created, and it makes you want to try new things."

To get involved in the action, follow Mr Rose @98rosjon, Miss White @susie_white2001 and reporter Joanna Till @joannacroydonad, and include #purleybreakfastclub or #purleydinnerclub in your tweets. To attend the event, visit twtvite.com/3ximze
