Reporter Neil Millard's Lexus Croydon 10k experience

There is nothing quite like trying to run 10km without stopping - against your better judgement - while a man with a megaphone screams encouragement at you from a shiny new four by four.

But that's what everyone who took part in the Lexus Croydon 10k had to contend with on Sunday as Croydon Athletic coach Mike Fleet took to the road in typical voice.

Without a hint of jealousy the hundreds who took part dutifully panted around the rest of the course to be greeted by a goodie-bag of oranges, apples and chocolate at the end.

With lungs that felt like they had gone ten rounds with a bonfire for the best part of an hour, the most refreshing sensation struck most runners as they sat down on the wet grass afterwards.

But you have to give Fleet credit for what was, yet again, an enjoyable event.

With inevitable humour he faithfully reeled off a list of the sponsors as runners continued to fling themselves over the finish line.

"If you can't afford a Lexus, then get your friends to buy one," he boomed.

The course - back starting where it always had before officials moved it last year - was no walk in the park.

Hill after hill took their toll on the pack. One man standing at the finish told Fleet he had lost his wife (she was somewhere along the course).

Fleet, of course, rose to the challenge: "Wait there Sir, and I will find you another one."

'Spot prizes' kept things interesting too - anyone who could find the calories to muster some kind of smile or wave were often rewarded with a gift at the awards ceremony.

Long may this event continue - its popularity and the winning time 32 minutes are proof that in Croydon, running is king.
