Nine-man Palace hold for brave point

Saturday, August 23, 2008, 18:53

Nine-man Crystal Palace held on for a valuable point as Shaun Derry and James Scowcroft saw red in a fiery encounter against Burnley at Selhurst Park.

Scowcroft picked up two yellows for two seperate elbowing incidents, the first being in the 35th minute on Mike Duff and the second just two minutes after the restart, this time on Clarke Carlisle.

And just five minutes later Derry was given his marching orders after picking up two bookings, one for dissent in the 51st minute and the second for a wreckless challenge on Wade Elliott just a minute later.

The fiery second half was a complete opposite to the opening period where Nick Carle and Martin Paterson missed both side's best chances.

But after the remarkable opening seven minutes of the second period, Palace were forced into a backs to the wall job.

Chris Eagles, Graham Alexander and Christian Kalvenes all went close before Chris McCann thought he had given Owen Coyle's men the lead - but his scrambled effort from Robbie Blake's 75th minute corner was ruled out for a foul on Julian Speroni as Palace held on for a hard-earned and brave point.
