ATTACK: An inspector was dragged off a West Croydon tram in a Saturday night attack

Two young women have been arrested on suspicion of assaulting tram staff in a horrifying attack in Croydon town centre.

Two ticket inspectors were attacked on a packed tram on a Saturday evening between Centrale and West Croydon, with one woman inspector dragged off the tram when it stopped.

She was left with whiplash and a black eye and the other, a man, was left with bruising to the hand.

British Transport Police are now appealing for witnesses to the attack, which happened on October 4 at about 9.10pm.

BTP Constable Mark Walden said: "It would appear two members of staff were assaulted following a revenue-related matter on a tram travelling between Centrale and West Croydon on the Saturday night.

"CCTV shows one of the inspectors was dragged off the tram at West Croydon as part of the assault.

"We are continuing our investigation into this serious incident. After viewing CCTV it is evident that there were numerous other passengers on board the tram, and at the tram stop at the time of the assault, and we believe they may be able to assist us with our inquiries.

"We are appealing to any members of the public who may have witnessed the assault to please come forward with any information they may have."

Witnesses can contact PC Walden on 0208 253 7650.

The two women, aged 19 and 20, have been bailed until December pending further police inquiries.
