Paedophile's sick perversion exposed when he took laptop to Purley Way store for repair

Tuesday, August 19, 2008, 07:00

A paedophile with a addiction to child porn was caught when eagle-eyed staff at PC World spotted the sick images on his laptop.

Retired computer programmer Jeff Groves took his machine into the store in Purley Way for repair.

Workers were shocked and sickened when they found pornography on a grand scale.

They informed police, who came to the store ready to arrest Groves when he turned up to collect his laptop.

Today, the 64-year-old pleaded guilty to making, or downloading, 359 indecent images of children and was given a ten months jail sentence suspended for two years at Croydon Crown Court.

Prosecuting, Hamish Reid said Groves, of The Elms, Tavistock Road, Croydon, was having trouble with his computer and he took it to PC World on September 20 last year.

"Images of a pornographic nature were found on it and police were called.

"He went back to the store a couple of hours later and he told officers that there were only cartoons on the machine, and no children."

An analysis of the laptop revealed more than 100,000 pictures, about 70,000 of which related to adults. Of the 359 images of children, more than 100 were of a high level of indecency.

"When his home was searched, a number of DVDs were found. He lives alone and he admitted that no-one else had access to the computer."

There was no suggestion that he had been entering or using website chat lines. The images had been entirely for his own use.

Defending, Robert Hunter said Groves had shown remarkable naivety in taking his laptop to the store - leading inexorably to these proceedings.

Judge Timothy Stow Q.C. imposed a three years supervision order in addition to the suspended jail sentence and he told Groves, who pleaded guilty to making indecent images of children: "It is very much in your interest to keep out of trouble and not to indulge in this kind of activity again."
