ONLY a run of victories can save Purley from relegation now after the division's bottom side slumped to their ninth defeat of the season last Saturday.

The hosts found themselves on the back foot from the start, with Brook's openers George Adolphus and Matt Swarbrick latching onto any loose deliveries to reach 90 without loss.

The introduction of Keith Medlycott, who was to bowl unchanged from the pavilion end, and Assad Naeem brought Purley back into the game however.

Medlycott had Swarbrick caught and bowled for a well-played 57, just as he was looking to be really destructive.

Naeem, bowling his left-arm medium pace, was bowling tightly and making it hard for Adolphus to get going. He then dismissed James Walters and Tom Hicks, both caught in the slips to bring Purley right back into the game at 128-3.

Harry Schofield helped settle Adolphus who had passed 50 but was looking fidgety. Razi Khan replaced the tiring Naeem after lunch and the spinners worked hard to restrict Brook, before Medlycott dismissed Adolphus, brilliantly caught by Fuaad Syed for 93.

Khan and Medlycott continued to bowl tightly but the score kept ticking on. Brook finished their innings on 258-9, Khan picking up 4-54 and Medlycott 3-94 from his 28 overs.

In reply, Purley started their innings well but once again a collapse in the middle order handed Brook a comfortable win.

John Fry and Syed negated the opening pair with ease as they looked to attack anything loose. Fry was out lbw for 26 with Purley on 48-1 but Adam Windley (33) batted with great confidence and attacked the bowling from the beginning.

As Purley passed 100-1, the win looked in sight with plenty of time to bat, but the turning point came when Windley looked to hit Tom Hicks out of the ground only to find Swarbrick underneath it at long-on.

It was a hammer blow and when Syed (49) hit Hicks straight to Ed Katzler, Purley were unable to recover. Batsmen came and went and James Procter (4-48) came back on to take out the lower order with good pace as the hosts were all out for 168.
