Missing dog found hiding in bush in Selsdon

Wednesday, August 20, 2008, 17:00

AN animal rescuer is over-the-moon after being reunited with her lost greyhound who was found hiding in a hedge.

The dog, Lily, went missing in Sanderstead, on August 11, and Denise Dubarbier asked Advertiser readers last week to keep an eye out for her.

And she was discovered in the grounds of Selsdon's John Ruskin College on Tuesday.

The 15-month old animal had been living in a rescue centre in Hersham, north Surrey, run by Mrs Dubarbier.

The animal rescuer, from Crown Lane, Upper Norwood, took Lily in to stop her being put to sleep because she was too nervous to race.

Although still fragile, Lily was almost ready to go to a foster home and was on trial with a couple living in Church Way, Sanderstead.

But while she was being walked, one of her potential new owners tripped, let go of the lead and frightened Lily ran off.

After an eight-day search Croydon dog warden Peter Wood, found her hiding in bushes at the college.

He coaxed her out, collared her and phoned the rescue centre with the good news.

A tea party was held to celebrate and Mrs Dubarbier said: "Lily's a lot more switched off than normal, she's not as nervous at the moment.

"She's enjoying the company and the fuss. It's such a relief, it's the best news we could have had.

"We just keep looking at her to make sure we're not dreaming."

The 54-year-old also thanked people in Sanderstead and Selsdon for their help.

"I don't think we came across anyone who didn't want to help, they were absolutely fantastic," she said.
