Ladies football match in memory of woman murdered by her husband

Saturday, August 09, 2008, 07:00

The dad of a woman strangled to death by her husband organised a women's football match in her memory to raise awareness of domestic violence.

Chris Phillips set up a friendly between Crystal Palace Ladies FC and Gillingham Ladies last Sunday because his daughter Johanna Croxton was a huge football fan.

Johanna was murdered by her violent and abusive husband Jonathan in December 2005.

Chris, from Rogers Close, Old Coulsdon, said: "I organised it to raise awareness of domestic violence through woman's football.

It wasn't to raise money it was just to raise awareness. It went very well."

Chris and Johanna used to go to Crystal Palace games all the time when she was child because Chris worked at the ground.

He held an auction in June to raise money for domestic violence charity Refuge in June and he hopes to keep raising awareness about it with events like this one.

He said: "It was purely for Jo. I told them what a fan of Palace she was and they was pleased.

"I met the players and they felt like they were doing something really important.

"It was a good way to remember Jo. I've been planning it for five months to help promote the cause.

"It was something I thought about and the manager was really up for it."
