'Pillarbox was a Godsend. But now Royal Mail has taken it away'

Saturday, August 23, 2008, 07:00

An elderly woman says she has been cut off from every day life after her local post box was taken away.

The removal of the pillar box a fortnight ago in Selhurst Road, Selhurst, follows the closure of the sub-post office in the Londis store which it was outside.

For Rita Bryant, 82, this was her closest mail box.

She said: "Talk about inconvenience. That pillar box was a Godsend.

"It has been here as long as I have. Now I face a bus journey all the way to South Norwood because I have trouble walking.

"If I want to post a letter, I have to cross the road, walk to the bus stop, wait for a bus to South Norwood, which can take up to half an hour, then come back."

She contacted the Royal Mail which gave her the name and address of the collection manager and told her to send him a letter.

But Mrs Bryant asked: "How can I send a letter without that pillar box?"

In response a Royal Mail spokesman said: "The box was damaged by a vehicle and had to be removed and replaced.

"A new one should be in place this weekend. We apologise for any inconvenience."
