Young mother, 23, tragically loses life to cancer

Friday, August 08, 2008, 07:00

Hundreds of mourners paid tribute this week to a "fun-loving" young mother who tragically lost her life to cancer aged just 23.

Georgina Gadd died of cervical cancer on July 24, leaving her three-year-old daughter Sophie motherless.

On Tuesday, more than 200 people crammed into a Whyteleafe church to pay their respects to the "inspirational" woman who touched so many lives.

Her dad Graham Gadd, 78, said: "She was a fun-loving girl who liked to go to parties and clubbing.

"She loved her music she was single-minded and did everything for herself. She was always smiling."

George, as she was known to family and friends, grew up in Cudham Drive, New Addington, and went to Fairchildes Primary school, then on to Addington High and Selsdon High.

While she was at school she worked at Aumex chemist in Central Parade, New Addington.

After school she went to Croydon College for two years and then went to Kingston University to study nursing, where she was placed at Mayday Hospital.

She then had her daughter Sophie and she worked for two years as a cashier in a DIY shop.

She had recently returned work as a nurse for the elderly but was forced to leave when she got too ill.

George was diagnosed with cancer twelve months ago and although she had chemotherapy it spread and she passed away at East Surrey Hospital.

Three weeks ago, before going into hospital, she visited friends and family in New Addington.

Graham said: "She came up to see us to say goodbye.

"She drove herself up and could hardly walk when she got out of the car, she weighed about five-stone. It's a horrible disease. It's a very rare cancer she got and it spread all through her body.

"She wanted to stay alive for her daughter but it was not to be."

The family are keen to support MacMillan nurses, who helped care for George in the last weeks of her life.

Anyone who would like to make a donation in memory of George should make it to Macmillan Cancer Support.
