Annie's plea over HIV children
Monday, October 06, 2008, 16:50
The human rights activist said the difference between the rich and poor is obscene, with people living in unimaginable circumstances.
Annie, who was in Dublin for the Fourth Global Forum on Children Affected by HIV and Aids, said she will not stop campaigning for a generation who could be lost to the killer disease.
"You don't give this thing up, it's not going to go away," she said. "I'll be here today and I'll be continually campaigning because I feel that the inequity of the two worlds that we live in is an obscenity.
"I've seen poverty. We, on one side of the globe, have had so much benefit and on the other hand, when you actually witnesses it (poverty) and look at the circumstances that people live in, it's almost beyond comprehension."
More than 1,000 children are infected with HIV every day, with 15 million youngsters in the world having lost one or both parents to Aids.
Annie, 53, spoke out at the two-day forum, Together For Children, which aims to secure commitments for children affected by HIV and Aids to attain their right to health, education and welfare.
