For seven seasons, Paula has been the only female on the judging panel of the reality singing competition alongside Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson, but since the announcement of the Grammy-nominated songwriter joining them for the eighth season, some industry insiders have predicted that there would be a bit of rivalry between the two women, who worked together in 2000 on Kylie Minogue's hit, Spinning Around.
Not so, according to the show's host Ryan Seacrest.
"Let's clear the air. Paula and Kara are great together," he announced during the first-round auditions in New York.
"They used to live together and Paula helped her out years ago. Now the two of them are on the same team."
However, Simon tried to stir up trouble, saying: "I love catfights. I encourage them. It's no fun if everyone gets along."
He then joked: "I wouldn't have recognised Kara by the way Paula described her. I was expecting someone maybe 50 years old, about 180lbs, maybe a bit of grey hair."
