E! Online reports that the star isn't going to tie the knot with his long term girlfriend despite Charlize saying she wouldn't get married until gay marriage was legalised - California has now legalised same sex unions.
"I think she said 'nationwide'," Stuart joked at the premiere of his forthcoming movie Battle In Seattle.
"I don't think she mentioned 'state'. I want everyone to know that was her thing. I do believe that if you love someone you should be able to get married, but it's got nothing to do with my life or her life.
"I love her," he laughed. "What more do you want? We are happy. Leave us alone!"
Charlize also stars in Battle in Seattle which was written and directed by Stuart and also stars Woody Harrelson and Ray Liotta. It covers the 1999 protests outside the World Trade Organisation Meeting in Seattle.
