TV stars standing up to cancer

Wednesday, August 27, 2008, 19:51

Some of TV's biggest stars have revealed why they've signed up to participate in Stand Up To Cancer, a TV fundraiser for cancer awareness, which will be shown on US screens on September 5.

Desperate Housewives' Dana Delany told TV Guide: "I don't think there's one person on Earth who hasn't been affected by cancer. My father died of pancreatic cancer. My best friend is a breast-cancer survivor. So it's about time we did something about it."

Balthazar Getty from Brothers And Sisters added: "Both my grandmother and grandfather died of cancer. As a person, you think, 'What can I do?' This is a great example of what we can do."

"I have done many things for breast-cancer awareness - my mother has been a breast-cancer survivor for 28 years now," admitted CSI: Crime Scene Investigation's Marg Helgenberger (Catherine Willows).

"The more people are aware of it, the more they will hopefully fund and research it. I just think it's a message you can't get tired of hearing."

And while Ugly Betty America Ferrera hasn't personally been affected by the disease, she knew that she had to be involved.

"It just doesn't seem like the exception any more. It just seems like eventually someone you know will get cancer and have to deal with it. So I'll juggle, swallow swords with fire, or whatever is asked of me!" she said.

Other stars taking part include Halle Berry, Jessica Alba, Jack Black, Jennifer Garner and Jennifer Aniston.
