Croydon's parks win top awards

Wettern Tree Garden, Happy Valley and Coombe Wood have all won a national Green Flag award, putting them among some of the best parks in the country.
The annual awards are organised by the Civic Trust and is the national standard for parks and green spaces in England and Wales and is designed to encourage high environmental standards in public green areas.
Judges examined the cleanliness and quality of conservation in the three parks and how well each one serves its local community.
Coombe Wood in Conduit Lane and Wettern Tree Garden in South Croydon were both first time winners while the award represented a third Green Flag success for Happy Valley in Old Couldson.
Croydon Council's cabinet member for culture and sport, Councillor Steve Hollands said: "These prestigious awards are recognition of the hard work undertaken by my colleagues in the parks department.
"Croydon is lucky to have many delightful parks and open spaces and we take great pride in them, ensuring that they are well looked after for residents for many years to come."
Richard Ottaway, Conservative MP for Croydon South in which Wttern Tree Garden and Happy Valley fall, added: "For a London constituency, Croydon South is exceptionally well served with green spaces which are cherished and well used by local residents.
"Warmest congratulations go to all those, officers and volunteers, who manage and maintain these green spaces for all to enjoy."
Sue Ireland, director of open spaces at City of London Corporation, who are responsible for Happy Valley, said: "It is testament to the hard work and dedication of staff and volunteers who work throughout the year to maintain and protect our open spaces, both now and for future generations to enjoy."
