Doomed Addington High scores best ever exam results

Thursday, August 21, 2008, 14:33

One of the schools earmarked for closure has recorded its best ever GCSE exam results.

Addington High's headteacher Tim Davies says it is another sign that the school shouldn't close.

Another school earmarked for closure, Haling Manor, also saw its results rise.

A four per cent rise saw 31 per cent of Addington High pupils score five or more A* to C grades including English and maths.

This is above the government's 30 per cent target for all schools but below Croydon Council's own target of 40 per cent.

Headteacher Tim Davies said the results are proof the school is continuously on the up and shouldn't have to close to be replaced by an academy.

He said: "I'm more than delighted, we've made improvements and progress during a difficult time for the school.

"The secondary review has meant the future of the school is uncertain, but it's a credit to everyone involved that we've exceeded expectations.

"The grades might not be as high as other schools, but the value added, the improvements the pupils have made since joining, is very impressive.

"A radical change, a new school, could put our level of care and expertise in jeopardy."

Haling Manor saw its A* to C results including English and maths improve to 25 per cent from 18 per cent last year.

Deputy head Peter Weir said: "What these results show is that Haling Manor isn't a mediocre school, it's improving year after year.

"The students here have always achieved very well. There is a feeling among students, staff, parents and the community that they want this school to stay open.

"I fell most keenly for the families with students who are starting here in September, I think the results underline that they placed their confidence in the right school."

Selsdon High and Westwood Language College, the other at threat schools, have not yet calculated their results.
